Tributes to Jack Wright

From: Jackie & James Stover
Star City, Arkansas, formerly of Millersville, Maryland
Relation: good friend

Tribute from James: We are sorry that Jack is gone but we shall meet him again someday. We enjoyed knowing him where we lived in Millersville, MD around 1998 and before he used to ask me to go with him to some workshops to interpret for him about what it was like to be deaf/blind as awareness - he was always cheerful and outgoing with friends from far and near. Our condolences go to his friends and families.

To the Jack Wright family from Jackie: so sorry to learn of his passing. We were friends and neighbors in Maryland area before I retired and moved to Arkansas. I know you all will miss him as we will too. He showed me how to fix antique chairs. He really was an expert in that field. I interpreted many sport events on TV for him. He truly was an amazing guy because he never acted as if he was blind. So long Jack until we meet again.

Tribute: Hello to the Wright's family. Deeply sympathy of Jack's passed away. I used to work with him years ago, I sometimes visited him at Nursing home. But he didn't remember who I was. However, I brought his old friends, Arthur Roehrig of Washington DC to nursing home for visiting. Jack was totally happy to see Art, again. They had a good talking to each other for more than an hour. The pictures are here on this site. God be with you, all Dawn K. Watts

Tribute: To the Wright Fanily, Jack was the first President of MWADB. I am now the current President. I feel as if I am walking in his footsteps. When Jack lived in Silver Spring, he and I often shared rides going to some activities. He enjoyed camping and MWADB picnic. Ironically, he died just days before MWADB had our annual picnic. Peggy Johnson's deaf blind camp, where Jack went every year, was the following day. Jack will be missed by many. He was a role model. He taught others not to be afraid of being deaf blind. With heartfelt sympathies to all of you. hugs, Betsy

Relation: “family” of MWADB

From: Blaise & Ulf Tribute: Family, We're grateful to have him as our "family" of MWADB for many years. He had a great heart for the DeafBlind community and couldn't afford to miss any of MWADB events. He was a fun person to be with as well as a lot of laughs together. While he lived in Silver Spring, we took him out for dinner and had committee meetings at our homes. He always shared his great experience of being a DB with us so we could deal with that similiarity. He always told us how much he loved and missed you all and was excited to see his family during Christmas and summers. We always remember him!

Tribute: I was surprised to see Jack Wright's name and I knew who he was immediately. A few years ago, I was a volunteer Support Service Provider (SSP) and Deaf-Blind interpreter for one meeting and Jack needed ride, so I volunteered to pick him up and drive to the meeting, afterwards, I drove him home. I remember what a kind man he was and I had no idea he'd moved to Ohio. I had to put my volunteering on hold for a long time and I know Jack will be missed a great deal. May God be with him forever. Tribute: I will miss Jack -- he was a friend, a great story-teller, a fun guy, and a remarkable person. He touched the lives of many people, bringing hope and inspiration to countless people. I remember introducing him to a young woman with Ushers syndrome who had never met a deaf-blind person before -- she was afraid of signing into his hand but he put her at ease, and after talking with Jack and seeing what he can do, she was less frightened of becoming deaf-blind. When Japanese researchers came to find out about deaf-blind people in America, Jack and Laura Engler graciously invited them into their homes. Jack showed them how he did things himself, and the Japanese understood how capable are deaf-blind people. I still teach blind people some of the tricks that Jack taught me when I was teaching him orientation and mobility. Jack, the world is the better for your having been here, thank you for your love and inspiration.

Tribute: Jack and I were schoolmates. We both were "bad boys" in school as we were smokers. Jack and I spent a lot of time sneaking around to get in a smoke. Years later we became members of the same church in Alexandria, VA. My latest remembrance of Jack was each Sunday at church he would always give me a BIG bear hug. He will be missed. Sympathy from Evelyn and me to all his kin and friends. By the way Evelyn Black Yates, my wife, was a classmate of Jack's brother Buford.

Tribute: Jackie was a truly gentleman who loved to help others, especially the deaf-blind people of all kinds. He had a great tender heart. I never forget that he was one of three or four speakers before the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on the half of Northern Virginia Association of the Deaf in its pursuit for a community/resource center for the deaf, hard of hearing and deaf-blind in 1987. He was a big impact on the supervisors with his intelligence and modesty. He gave a speech from his memory through an interpreter. He was so remarkable! The center concept became a realty as Northern Virginia Resource Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons has been in operation for 19 years. Our Lord bless him with His heart. We are glad that he was with us, not only for the deaf but deaf-blind and other people with disabilities as well. We miss him.
